Holiday Traffic

Fifteen miles of backed-up Thanksgiving holiday traffic made us wonder: is family really worth this?

(We said yes, since we were traveling the opposite way.)

The Moon

As Hurricane Sandy was approaching and meteorologists were warning residents on the east coast that the storm surges would be made worse because of the full moon, I couldn't help but admire its beauty. It was washed in a haze of cloudy sky here, pulling tides toward shore in other states.

No Rush

My daughter starts junior high school next week. She nervously confided that she doesn't want to grow up. She loves being a kid.

I soothed her, and told her not to worry. But secretly, I don't want her to grow up, either.

Jackson Family Values

Methinks the Jacksons are not that popular in Canada, eh? Most of the flyers we saw on light poles had been marked up in some way.

Guards

Watching the changing of the guard at Parliament Hill in Ottawa made me think of my son. He served on the Honor Guard in the Air Force last summer and loved all the pomp and precision of it. As I watched them, I thought of him.

Comic Relief

In the midst of heated conversations and tragedy, we need a bit of comic relief. I saw this limo advertisement in Willebroek, Belgium as I left the concentration camp. I needed a bit of comic relief at that moment, too.

House Faces

Ever notice how some houses seem to be smiling? I like it when I can see a face on a house. I'm not sure why. In this particular case, I think that the house is grinning simple-mindedly with the warning: Watch that first step! It's a doozy!

Car For Sale

We saw this car for sale in New Orleans. There was no way to capture all the decorations, bottlecaps, jewels, watch faces, etc.. that adorned this. I'm not sure whether it's driveable or not, but it's certainly a unique piece or art.

A Spot of Tea

I took this picture at a tea shop in China, but everytime I look at the picture, a British voice plays in my head saying, "I think I'll have a spot of tea." That's about all this cup holds -- a spot.

Happiness Is...

Happiness is...being together.

Could there be anything more beautiful in life than two happy little girls?

I imagine them as refugees, looking for a haven for birds who won't fly.

With A Handshake

I think there are some defining moments in life. Pivotal moments.

With one handshake, he transitioned from boy to man.
