So we decided to lock our cars

We kept our immunity as long as we could,
not succumbing to the scare tactics of the
nightly news. We would not live in fear!
Then one morning we awoke to find
our car battery dead. The dome light on,
passenger door slightly ajar; the work of
teenagers, we supposed. The glove box open,
papers scattered. The only things missing:
a handful of quarters and a fresh pack
of cigarettes. Nothing of value. And yet,
the intrusion, the trespass, forced our surrender.
White flag raised, we locked our doors.
