Journalling

As mentioned, we've planned an upcoming trip to Savannah. So today, I'm going journal shopping since I ran out of pages in my last travel journal. I'm ready for a new one. This is important, because my mother, my daughter and I journal every evening during our trips and then share them with each other as a recap of the day.

It's interesting to see how differently we process our trips. My mother captures wonderful details about people we meet and conversations that take place. My daughter's perspective ranges from extreme detail on one aspect of the day, to writing about how silly one of us were. I love hearing/reading her take on events. I generally capture more of the logistics and facts of what we saw, where we went, etc.. I may try something new this time-- something more contemplative. We'll see.

But first things first. I'm off to buy a journal!

  1. That is such a wonderful thing to do together. Just today my mom talked about writing some things down for me -- her thoughts and memories from her life before me -- and I thought about how great it would be to have her thoughts to read. :)

  2. I have been writing in a journal since 1996/97 because I have just too darn much going on in my head. Even if there isn't much happening in my mind, I'll write that down - and then end up writing about 3 pages by accident. Oops! ;)
Anyway, when I travel, I buy a travel journal. It's a lot of fun to use them. In recent years, I have gotten myself a good one to use at the same holiday destination more than once... all I do is skip two pages and I'm in the next holiday. Pretty good, eh? Mum thought I was being silly until she read the travel journal and thought to try and keep one as well, but she couldn't think of anything to say. I started her off and asked her what the morning felt like - the sun, the sound of the waves and the colour of the river water at low tide. She got writing quickly. However, it only lasted two days. Pity she can't concentrate for long periods.

I took up travel journalling when I traveled to the UK... there was so much going on, I took notes on a notepad, then tranferred the notes over in details into a travel journal each night. I glued in booklets of where we went and pubs we visited. By the time I returned home, I could read it again and be back on my trip in the UK anytime I wanted. Mum even read it and loved it too. This is how I came to writing in a journal most days while on holidays; and still do.

  3. Exactly, Mozette! This is why we do it, too. I recently flipped through an old travel journal of a trip we took to Florida when my daughter was six. I was so glad I'd captured the insanity of the drive down because we might have forgotten. She sang "Happy Birthday to..." every single thing she could think of. I think she sang the song a hundred times on our drive. We all laughed as I read the journal aloud and we remembered. Good times.
